Second attempt for this!! Born and bred NLW amd lived local till '86. Apparently my grand-dad (Mannion) and five of his brothers were the mainstays of Earlestown Bohemians AFC in the mid to late 1930's and the team included a young Joe Fagen who went on to manage Liverpool. Any further info much appreciated.
The pic in the gallery of sports for Newton County Primary should be RLFC as we played rugby not soccer till 67-68 academic year!!
Finally lived in Belverdere Rd(from 64-70) backing on to the fields. Wood Pit was across the fields and Vista Rd. I know it closed in 1971. Can anyone tell me when they stopped using the bucket and pulley system that dumped the slag on the spoil heap? It was working when I first lived Belv. Rd. but not when we left.

lovely cosy website, very neat. My Jackson ancestor married into the Warburtons in Winwick(i.e. my John Jackson md Ellen Burton - father was Thomas Warburton - in 1844) These Warburtons were(allegedly) "farmers with 1000 head of cattle, but lost it all" dont know why or when. John Patrick Corcoran/Mary Jane Ormshaw
I am trying to find information about (or family of ) my grandparents John Corcoran (born Earelstown 1885) and Mary Ormshaw (born 1886 Ashton in Makerfield).They were married in Wigan 8c 184 in 1909.
John had siblings also born in Earelstown - Joseph, Elizabeth and Thomas - the others were born in Leigh and Ashton in Makerfield.
John's parents were Patrick Corcoran (born in Ireland)and Ellen Garrafin.
Mary's parents were John Ormshaw and Sarah Adamson.
Other names include: Ellen Lowe, Abraham Shaw
I have a lot more information including dates if it would be of any help  .

Just found the site, fantastic. My great grandmother was born in Newton le Willows 1844. Her name was Elizabeth Hill, she married someone call Forshaw originally, then my great grandfather Thomas Seed of Warrington. Her sister Margaret 1830also born in Newton le Willows, married Thomas' brother Samuel. Elizabeth and Margaret were 2 of 8 children born to James Hill of Winwick and Elizabeth Boardman of Burtonwood. Are there any descendants around that would like to contact me? |

Hello All
I have been redirected to this site from the Rootsweb Lancashire lookup site, and I am thrille to fin a site just dedicated to the place my ancesters came from.
My 3rd Great Grandfather was born in Newton-le-Williows in about 1787 and I have just found out he was buried in St Peters church yard on the 15th of Jan 1860, would anyone know if the Head stone was still there and if so was his wife Mary buried along side him.
Matthews grandson Richard Brandwood moved his family to Sheffield sometime in the 1890s but before that they all came from the newton area.

I am researching my family history and have found relatives in Earlstown. My Great Grandfather, Peter Emmess was born on 18 march 1871 to his mother Susan and father Thomas James Emmess. The address given on the birth certificate is 1 Chandos Street and the occupation of Thomas James Emmess is Iron Dresser at Foundry. I'm aware that there were a number of foundries in the area and wondered if anybody could suggest which one Thomas may have worked at. I have a problem as I cannot find any birth, or marriage records for Thomas and so have come to a stop. My other question is, therefore, is there any history of migration from Liverpool to Newton-le- Willows & Earlstown? |

I am a family historian & recently I found in with my mother-in-laws photographs a group picture taken outside a building which has a plaque on the wall which is difficult to read.The back of the photo shows the photographer as Rowland King,printer & photographer, Earlestown.The photo shows 25 men, including one dressed as a caretaker & one very importent one in a bow tie.Also standing at the back three women.What is unusual is that all except those particularly mentioned are wearing an emblem on their lapels which resembles a white bell.If anyone has any knowledge of what this photo may pertain to I would be very interested to know. |

Just found this site after years of trying to research my Mannion/Devane family history. My grannie, Catherine Gavan married John Devane in 1901, and later married John Mannion in 1910.
