These are inscriptions from the grave stones at Wargrave Emmanual Church, they were transcribed by Graham Normansell, who has kindly let me reproduce them here into the website, where he feels they will be useful to those searching their family tree

INTRODUCTION

The task of copying and publishing the inscriptions in the church and churchyard of Emmanuel Church, Wargrave was carried out mainly during the spring of 1997.

At sometime in the earlier part of the 1980's, many of the stones were taken up and relaid round the pathway to the south of the church. Of the stones remaining upright, many were backed together to aid their support. It is difficult to say now whether any reflect the actual position of the grave plots of those mentioned in the inscriptions. For this reason it was not considered that any useful purpose would be served in making a scale plan of the graveyard and the new position of the stones therein.

It is not known how many, if any, gravestones were discarded completely in the relandscaping process - there is little evidence that side and foot curbs have survived intact. Also, some stones show evidence of having been cut through with a mechanised stone cutting tool. Some of the side and foot curbs appear to have been used to create raised flower beds in circular form, to the south side of the church.The graveyard was closed for burials in 1982.

For the purpose of sectioning the grave yard into manageable areas for transcribing, the inscriptions have been copied in five sections A to E, which accord with the enclosed rough sketch of the church and churchyard.

The original parish registers covering Births ( 1841 - 1952 ), Marriages ( 1844 - 1922 ) and Burials ( 1844 - 1976 ) are now at the Wigan Record Office, Town Hall, Leigh. Microfilmed copies are available at The History Shop, Rodney Street, Wigan, and also at Leigh and St. Helens public libraries.

There is a gap in the burial registers between 1854 and July 1892. As there were certainly interments during this period, the assumption is that the registers became misplaced around the middle of 1892 and have never been found since. Bishops transcripts covering the years 1845 - 1855 have survived for baptisms, marriages and burials. Additionally, there is one transcript covering the year 1893 for baptisms and burials only. These also have been microfilmed and can be seen at the Lancashire Record Office, Bow Lane, Preston under reference MF 4/90. From the commencement of interments up until the gap in the registers, the majority of burials were of people from the Haydock Lunatic Asylum and to a lesser extent from the Newton Workhouse.

The first baptism of Anne, daughter of William and Mary Dickenson of Newton took place on 19th September 1841. The first marriage took place on 22nd December 1844 between James Naylor and Mary Brown. The first recorded burial was that of Hamlet Roberts aged 55 years, of Newton Workhouse, on 11th February 1844.

Hi Pete

Yes, they probably are in the library, Graham did produce three books from details he transcribed, When he called round to see me, he brought the books to show me, and he also brought his original floppy disks containing the word-perfect files he published them from..he allowed me to copy his original data, so the spelling mistakes and errors for once are someone else's

I also have the original files from the Congregational Church Inscriptions on Crow Lane, and also his work sorting out which graveyards the people are buried in, from the 100s that dies in the local pit disasters

I will add the other data from these files later, at the moment they are in a format that would be ok to print into a book, but not paste into the forum.

At sometime in the earlier part of the 1980's, many of the stones were taken up and relaid... It is not known how many, if any, gravestones were discarded completely in the relandscaping process...

I'm sad to say I can actually shed some light on this. Several of the stones were destoyed and discarded. In fact, (and I cringe now typing this) several wheelbarrows of broken-up headstones ended up being wheeled round to houses in local streets to make garden walls and so on.

Many thanks for posting these grave inscriptions, I have now managed to find the last resting place of four of my Ancestors.
My Father Frederick Henry Cutts was born in Earlestown 1901 his father Leonard Littlewood Cutts was a Saddler and Harnessmaker at 78 Market Street.

His Mother was Adelaide Bateman Cutts (nee Attfield) and it is her Grandparents Miles and Hannah Bateman who are buried in this churchyard.
